What is Purpose?
Since the airing of Oprah's groundbreaking and important webinar and show with Eckhart Tolle, discussing his magnificent book A New Earth, living ON purpose has become a common topic of conversation. Since I have titled my newsletter Success Strategies...Living Your Life ON Purpose I thought it would be a good time to share my thoughts on what, exactly, it all means.
I believe each of us is born with a life purpose. Identifying, acknowledging, and honoring this purpose is perhaps the most important action successful people take.
We've all met people whose work and life seems inspired. They exude enthusiasm. They appear to genuinely care about what they are doing, their sense of joy seems to come from deep within. When we meet such people we realize they are living their life consistent with their purpose. They know why they are here, and they know the difference they want to make. This clarity and focus on their purpose makes them stand out from most other people we meet.
Mission, vision, vocation, calling, bliss, meaning, passion - these are just some of the words that have been used to describe our human need to identify and express our purpose. Ultimately, finding your purpose is a spiritual quest. It represents your ability to connect with something greater than yourself.
From the time you are born until the time you die, you are growing and changing. As we go through life, there are specific developmental tasks we need to complete before moving on to the next stage. Roughly, from the mid-thirties to the late fifties, we begin to come to terms with the meaning of our lives. We begin to ask Who am I? Why am I here? What do I want to be when I grow up?
These questions are critical if we want to continue to grow and live to our fullest potential.
Is there a difference between meaning and purpose? I think there is. You can have a meaningful life whether or not you have a purpose. Meaning is the significance that you attach to an event, person, or situation. To ascribe meaning ia a rational, left-brain act. Purpose, on the other hand, is something that flows from deep within you. Purpose is the potential that you hold. Purpose is what you are called to do. It is a part of your uniqueness. Finding your purpose is an inner journey. The journey starts where you are and arrives at where you want to be.
Are you ready to find your purpose? Try the following exercise:
Begin by taking a moment to think about who you are and who you wish to become. Imagine yourself one year from today. If you could have anything you want, with no possible way to fail, what would it be? What do you most want for yourself? When you look back on this period of your life, in say 20 years, what do you want to remember? What experiences do you want to have? What accomplishments?
Write a letter to yourself that describes where you will be one year from today based on the questions above, date it and seal it in an envelope to be opened by only you. Put it where you will find it one year from today.
With clarity and focus you will be on the way to discovering your purpose. The journey isn't easy but you don't have to make it alone. I have several programs available to help guide you on your journey to living a life ON purpose. Relationship Money Matters A 12 week group for couples
Are you tired of fighting about money? How to spend it, how much to save, how to invest it?.....In virtually every research study, money ranks as the first or second most argued about topic in relationships. It is also one of the commonly sighted reasons for couples divorcing. Getting to financial harmony is a journey, one that will provide greater prosperity and a happier relationship.
If you are ready to stop fighting and start living a prosperous life, free of financial stress and disharmony, this group is for you. Over the course of 12 weeks you will uncover your "money story" - those core beliefs you have about money that were shaped by your early experiences, learn to appreciate and respect your different styles, resolve money conflicts, and become partners in a meaningful relationship with money. Money doesn't have to be a source of pain. You can have a balanced and harmonious relationship in as little as 12 weeks.
The group is limited to five couples. The initial group will meet every other Monday from 6-7:15pm PST.
